The Department of Computer Science (CS) comprises several special-interest labs focused on a number of research areas including: algorithms & complexity, architecture & operating systems, artificial intelligence & machine learning, bioinformatics, computer graphics & vision, cryptography, cyber physical systems, data science, file and storage systems, human-computer interaction, modeling & verification, natural language processing, networking and mobile computing, parallel & distributed Systems, programming languages, quantum computing, robotics, security & privacy, and visualization & virtual reality.
Researchers have access to cutting-edge lab equipment, such as GPU-based servers and clusters, FPGA machines, virtual reality and augmented reality headsets, immersive visualization facilities, networking and wireless tools, robots—as well as numerous computational systems, storage servers, and clusters. CS also runs large computing clusters at the AI Center and the New York State Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT).
Funded by a large portfolio of federally funded projects, research labs include extensive resources spanning two CS buildings. These resources include a multi-gigabit network, Cat-7 wired network infrastructure, Wi-Fi 6 distributed wireless network, next-generation firewalls, and state-of-art data centers. Additionally, the University provides multiple high-speed Internet connections, a 100Gbps connection to Internet2, and several large computational clusters.
